Why are these very cute and very prickly little creatures called Hedgehogs? Well it turns out, the answer is simple... The hedgehog was named because of its peculiar foraging methods. Hedgehogs root through hedges and other undergrowth in search of the small creatures that compose the bulk of their diet, like insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and even small snakes. As a hedgehog picks its way through the hedges it emits pig-like grunts, thus, the hedgehog. Cute they may be but be careful, if threatened they will curl up in a ball of sharp spikes!
